Beijing kicked off a campaign to promote the cultural legacy of the Grand Canal with a grand opening ceremony on Wednesday.
The Grand Canal, a vast waterway connecting northern and southern parts of China, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
A documentary titled "Heading North" was aired at the opening ceremony, giving the audience a glimpse into the beautiful canal and the cultural customs of regions along its route.
The ceremony included a session where representatives from cities along the canal and volunteers shared stories of their bond with the canal and their efforts to protect the canal.
After the opening ceremony, 12 dragon boat teams competed at Shichahai, with the Cangzhou dragon boat team finishing first.
The campaign will present a series of cultural activities that will run through June 23, including cultural salons, exhibitions of calligraphy and photography works, the Shichahai International Hanfu Cultural Festival, and a canal-themed marketplace.
