Beijing unveiled an action plan recently to accelerate the coordinated innovation and development of the medical and health industry, aiming to propel the industry's total scale to 1.25 trillion yuan ($172.5 billion) by 2026.

In 2023, Beijing's medical and health industry reached an operating revenue of 976.1 billion yuan, paving the way for trillion-level growth. The city boasts seven high-quality parks, including Zhongguancun Life Science Park and Zhongguancun Medical Device Park in Daxing district.

Since 2018, over 50 new medical technology firms founded by top global scientists have emerged in Beijing, bringing the total to 84. Key achievements include innovative medical devices, AI class III medical devices and new-type drugs.

Over the past decade, a special healthcare development project has facilitated the optimization of 494 diagnostic methods and 877 treatment measures, the formulation or update 57 guidelines, and the filling of over 600 patent applications. The city has also built 30 research-oriented wards providing over 5,500 beds for clinical trials.

The action plan prioritizes original innovation. Zhang Jihong, director of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and the Administrative Commission of Zhongguancun Science Park, said the city plans to establish five to 10 high-level research bases combining basic and clinical research to foster groundbreaking discoveries and technologies.

Pan Feng, deputy director of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, revealed that fixed asset investment in the city's medical and health industry grew steadily to 12.46 billion yuan in 2023, 4.5 times that of 2018. Plans include adding 3,000 mu (494 acres) of land and constructing 3 million square meters of standard factories over three years.
