The 2024 Beijing-Hangzhou Dialogue on the Grand Canal Cultural Belt kicked off Monday in Hangzhou, eastern China's Zhejiang province. The event also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Grand Canal being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The dialogue, centered on the theme "A Decade of Transformation, the Future of the Grand Canal," was jointly organized by the Information Office of the Beijing Municipal People's Government, the Information Office of the Zhejiang Provincial People's Government, the Hangzhou Municipal People's Government, China News Service, and the World Historic and Cultural Canal Cities Cooperation Organization.

Liu Wei, deputy secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the event. He said that over the past decade, Beijing has recognized the Grand Canal Cultural Belt as a significant project in building the city into a national cultural center.

By holding the Beijing-Hangzhou Dialogue, Beijing aims to continue protecting and passing on the Grand Canal's cultural heritage, and foster cultural exchanges, Liu added.

Liu Jie, deputy secretary of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee and secretary of the CPC Hangzhou Municipal Committee, said that Hangzhou and other cities along the Grand Canal will collaborate to develop new protection methods, preserve the Grand Canal as a symbol of Chinese civilization, and enhance its cultural significance.
