Beijing will strengthen the development and application of new technologies in the elderly care services sector and upgrade its elderly care service system to address the challenges posed by an aging population, according to a forum held in Beijing on Thursday.

The number of elderly permanent residents in Beijing reached 4.9 million at the end of 2023, accounting for 22.6% of the city's total population. And the proportion is expected to surpass 30% by 2031.

To address this issue, Beijing is prioritizing the care service needs of older people, especially those in the "older elderly" category. It is also developing a comprehensive elderly care service system based on three key components: "one list, one platform, and one network."

"One list" refers to the design and formation of a complete set of universal elderly care service supply lists; "one platform" refers to the construction of a regional elderly care service center integrating home, community, and institutional care; and "one network" refers to the construction of a three-level elderly care service network covering all districts, sub-districts/townships, and communities.

Beijing has already set up 10,000 smart elderly care devices in nursing homes to help care for disabled seniors. The city plans to develop and use smart elderly care systems and devices. It will also focus on researching and promoting artificial intelligence and other new technologies in the elderly care services sector. The goal is to create a diverse and advanced elderly care service environment.

In addition, Beijing will guide domestic and foreign professional entities to invest in the city's elderly care industry and build a comprehensive professional development system to cultivate skilled professionals.
