China honored its top scientists and research projects at the annual National Science and Technology Award Conference in Beijing on Monday. Beijing-based institutions accounted for nearly 30% of the general award-winning projects, ranking first in the country.

Beijing's increased investment in basic research has significantly impacted this progress. In 2022, the city's basic research funding reached 47 billion yuan ($6.5 billion), accounting for 16.6% of its research and experimental development funding, on par with the average level of developed countries and ranking first in China. In 2023, 18 achievements from Beijing won the natural science award, representing more than 36% of the total. Most of these projects are basic research results that excel in the fields of transportation, electronic information, and advanced manufacturing.

LandSpace, a Chinese rocket company based in Beijing, was among the main contributors to a project that won the second prize in the science and technology progress award for key technologies and engineering applications of centrifugal pumps under complex and variable conditions. This achievement has advanced the development of liquid oxygen-methane engine technology and is expected to drive further innovation and breakthroughs in the industry.

Beijing's innovation-driven development has yielded numerous achievements. The city currently has 70 registered large models, accounting for half of the country's total, including the Beijing high-level autonomous driving demonstration zone, which has accumulated nearly 30 million kilometers of autonomous driving test mileage. Innovative technological breakthroughs continue to promote Beijing's deep transformation and upgrading of industries.

In 2023, Beijing's recognized and registered technology contracts surpassed 100,000, with a transaction volume exceeding 800 billion yuan. Looking ahead, the city plans to promote the development of strategic emerging industries such as new energy, new materials, commercial aerospace, and the low-altitude economy, while also exploring new frontiers for future industries, including quantum technology, life sciences, and 6G.
