Zhejiang TV's reality competition show, The Great Ones, showcasing the talent and creativity of makeup artists, wrapped up its season on Sunday. The show featured 100 skilled artists engaging in themed makeup challenges that pushed the boundaries of their artistry.
In the eighth episode, the theme "Butterfly" was chosen, a word rich in cultural and poetic significance, inspiring contestants to draw from the butterfly's symbolism of romance, freedom, transformation, and vitality prevalent in Chinese classical poetry.
Contestants were paired up, each duo tasked with creating contrasting designs on a model's face, exploring the duality of the butterfly's symbolism. One contestant embraced a cyberpunk aesthetic, symbolizing technology's impact on the environment, while another delicately portrayed the fragility of nature through a translucent butterfly design.
The final scores, determined by 11 judges, assessed contestants on creativity, aesthetics, and technique, showcasing the diverse interpretations and skills of the makeup artists.
Leng Song, a researcher at the Institute of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, commended the show for transcending mere competition. He described it as "a profound dialogue between the soul and aesthetics, a voyage into the limitless realms of art and self-discovery".
Song emphasized that the program goes beyond showcasing the technical prowess of makeup artists, delving into the theoretical underpinnings, trends, and cultural significance of makeup artistry. This approach aims to deepen viewers' appreciation and respect for the profession.
The participants of the show have adeptly fused elements of Chinese traditional culture with modern makeup artistry, incorporating motifs, such as floral forehead ornaments, calligraphy and landscape painting. This integration not only enabled viewers to admire beauty but also to immerse themselves in the allure of art and culture, enriching their aesthetic sensibilities.
