A housemaid accused of murdering an old woman last December stood trial in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province on Tuesday, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

Forty-five-year-old He Tiandai told the police that she had also attempted to kill nine other elderly people when she worked as a housemaid from June 2013 to December 2014. However, the police found that although seven of the nine victims died, their bodies had been cremated as their relatives didn't suspect the housemaid. Therefore, due to a lack of crucial evidence, the housemaid was only prosecuted for the murder she committed last December.

According to police, the suspect was hired by her last victim's daughter-in-law through an agency on Dec. 13, 2014. When she was hired, she had asked if she could receive her monthly wages if the old woman were to die after only a few days.

Three days after the suspect began to look after the old woman, she tried to poison the latter with a syringe filled with pesticide at midnight. When she found the old woman was still alive two hours later, she strangled her to death.

After the killing, the suspect called the victim's relatives and asked for 2,600 yuan (US$401.44), her monthly wages. However, the two sides had a quarrel as the relatives found some of the victim's property had gone missing.

The suspect called the police herself during the quarrel. Yet, when the police arrived at the scene, they found a suspicious mark seven centimeters long on the victim's neck. The suspect was detained on site.

The police later found 17 syringes, 17 needles, two bottles of deadly pesticide, two bags of rat poison and two razors in the suspect's package. Pesticide and sleeping drugs were also detected in the victim's blood.

The suspect admitted all the accusations in court, but she refused to reveal why she decided to kill the old woman.
