Keeping Nuclear Material Under Lock and Key

A licensing system is applied to all activities related to nuclear material. Entities involved in production, possession, use, transportation and handling of nuclear material are required to take measures to ensure adequate physical protection and control of and accounting for nuclear material. Nuclear security systems have been built at new nuclear facilities in accordance with the latest recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and billions of yuan have been invested in upgrading the security systems at existing nuclear facilities. These moves contribute significantly to enhanced security. To date, there have been no incidents of theft, loss or illegal use of important nuclear material.
